Jeanne Ryan, 48, was arrested after the Hudson Valley SPCA responded to a report of potential abuse or neglect at Argus Farm in Goshen, said SPCA officials.

During a raid of the Orange County farm in July, Humane Society law enforcement officers found the remains of five dead horses who have been starved to death in their stalls, the SPCA said.

In addition, the remains of a foal were found collapsed next to his decomposed mother in a nursing position. In another, an emaciated, but very much alive stallion was found standing over the remains of another deceased horse.

With no food, hay or water on the premises, the stallion had resorted to eating the wood window sills in an attempt to survive, they added.

The carcasses of another six horses were found piled up in nearby woods, officials said.

The rescued horse is expected to survive with veterinary care.

SPCA officials said they hesitated to share the photos and the story but decided to do so to allow the public to see what they and their law enforcement officers face each day.

Additional charges are pending against Ryan.
