Farmers Market to Debut in Yorktown Saturday

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Just four months after the idea was hatched at a community outreach meeting, the Yorktown Farmers Market is set to make its debut Saturday.

Twenty vendors from the Hudson Valley area are scheduled to participate in the kickoff of a planned 22-week not-for-profit venture, where most of the proceeds will be given each week to a different charitable organization.

"I saw the door open a crack and I jammed my foot in it," said Yorktown resident Karen Symington Muendell, who formed Maize Market Management in order to get the farmers market off the ground. "It's a unique idea."

The farmers market will be held most Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the field behind the Yorktown Heights Engine Company #1 on Commerce Street. The first 100 shoppers on Saturday will receive a reusable shopping bag, courtesy of the Fieldhome. The Yorktown Teen Center band will be performing at 10 a.m. and noon.

Having been a frequent visitor to other farmers markets in the area, including Ossining, Peekskill and Mount Kisco, Muendell, a private chef and caterer who owns Serves You Right Culinary in Yorktown, said she was constantly asked why Yorktown, which boasts several farms, didn't have a farmers market of its own.

"We want to highlight the benefits of shopping and eating locally, and to teach our kids to continue this re-emerging trend," Muendell said. "This country has gotten so far away from how we are supposed to eat. Nothing beats looking a farmer in the eye and learning about what will be on your dinner plate."

Muendell also said shoppers will find the prices at the farmers market will be competitive with fruit and produce sold at local supermarkets.

"I think people will be pleasantly surprised," she said. "It's very important to know where your food comes from and you get what you pay for."
