Full Schedule Set For Mohegan Lake Day On Sunday

MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. - One of Yorktown's largest recreational waterways will be on display for all residents to enjoy on Sunday.

The third annual Lake Day on Mohegan Lake is taking place with activities planned from 1 to 10 p.m. Ken Belfer, president of the Mohegan Lake Improvement District, said everyone is invited to participate.

"It was a lot of fun last year," said Belfer, who belongs to the Mohegan Colony Beach Association. "It seems to be building. Each year seems to get more participation."

Wildlife rehabilitator Patricia Johnson will get the day started with a talk on turtles in the lake at Mohegan Highlands Beach on Mohegan Avenue at 1 p.m., followed by a presentation of a sixth-grade science project on the effect of fertilizer on the lake.

Visitors can then take a boat to Mohegan Beach Park off Lakeshore Drive and Christine Avenue at 2 p.m. for a discussion led by Tom Maietto about the species of fish in Mohegan Lake.

At 2:45 p.m., at Section 1 Beach off Lakefront and Crawford there wil be a weed-harvester demonstration, followed by canoe, rowboat, kayak and sailboat races from 3 to 4:15 p.m.

Amazon Beach will host a meet and greet along with beach games at 4:30 p.m. on Wenonah Trail. The day will end at Mohegan Colony Beach with a pot luck dinner at 6:30 p.m., live music at 7 p.m. and an outdoor family movie at 8:30 p.m.

Belfer said the lake has a mixture of park districts and volunteer associations and the use of the lake varies.

"Some beaches are no longer in use and others are going strong," he said. "My sense is usage has continued to decline somewhat, but it varies greatly from beach to beach. The condition of the lake was declining for decades. However, it's been better than average water quality the last two years."

The rain date for Lake Day on Mohegan Lake is July 22.
