YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Michael Grace, the only candidate for Yorktown supervisor to have never previously held the position, appears to be the supervisor-elect, according to unofficial results from the Westchester County Board of Elections.
Grace, a former town attorney who now operates a law firm directly across the street from Town Hall, held 38 percent of the vote over former supervisor Don Peters with 34 percent. Grace said they were still waiting for the votes to be made official from the Board of Elections. Absentee ballots been for the race have not yet been counted.
Current Supervisor Susan Siegel pulled in 28 percent of the vote. The former town attorney said he believed the absentee vote numbers would be in his favor.
Grace said he ran a very clear campaign and, by doing so, told the voters that he had a very strong message and was in turn a strong messenger who would act on his word. It was the message or promises that caused his opponents, Don Peters and current Supervisor Susan Siegel, to falter, he said.
"As far as Donny was concerned, he had certain failures of his administration that had everybody upset. He didn't present himself as being a leader, rather just as someone being led," Grace said. "The problem with Susan was her style of leadership and some of her legislative agenda. She didn't understand and she just didn't have a feel for what was going on out here. I think she pursued the wrong policies, and her leadership left a lot to be desired."
Grace said his firm's physical proximity to Town Hall clued him in on some of the biggest complaints residents had with the current Yorktown administration.
"In my law practice, I sit here across the street and people come over here all the time, and it's always the same complaints," Grace said. "Everybody is kind of tired of being told what to do with their property. People are tired of bloated government and of government telling them what to do all the time."
