Greenburgh Gets Huge Response To Distribution Of Road Safety Reflectors

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- If you notice bright green lights moving around Greenburgh streets at night, don't worry, it's just a pedestrian making sure they can be seen by drivers.

Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner got the idea for the bands when local civic activist Murray Bodin spoke about the problem with pedestrians wearing dark clothing at night.

"I hadn't thought about the problem before Murray Bodin highlighted the issue," Feiner said. "But now that I'm paying attention to the issue, I see pedestrians walking wearing dark clothing almost nightly. And, it's scary."

That spurred Feiner to get in touch with AAA who in turn sent the city 75 bright neon armbands that walkers, runners and pedestrians can wear at night to be seen.

Now the problem is the armbands are so popular that he's getting a request for them at about one a second, Feiner reported.

"As of today we have about 80 people who are waiting for their armbands," he said. "An amazing response.

Feiner said the city will be purchasing 200 additional armbands for police officers to hand out when they see pedestrians out walking in dark clothing.

The city also plans to reach out to the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs for help in sponsoring the initiative.

"Whenever I drive around Greenburgh and other communities in Westchester, I observe near accidents. Motorists can't see the pedestrians who are walking because it's dark outside," Feiner added.

Until the armbands arrive, Feiner is asking parents to tell their children, spouses, neighbors and friends to wear bright clothing when walking in the middle of the night.

"I hope that all communities in Westchester will also give this their attention," he said. "So far three other municipalities have sent me emails advising they are interested in the initiatives."
