Harrison High School stole the show, taking several awards for the show "Crazy For You" including Outstanding Overall Production. The "Metros" began in 1998 “to shine a spotlight on the exceptional musical theater productions, talented actors and actresses and devoted creative teams who take to the stage every spring in our local high schools,” according to the Helen Hayes Youth Theatre, the company that hands out the awards. Larchmont's own John Treacy Egan, Broadway star of "The Producers" hosted Monday night's show in front of a packed Paramount.
About 40 high schools from Rockland, Westchester and Bergen counties entered the competition this year. Metros Producer Danielle Rudess said she was especially proud of the show's 15th year.
"I call it the 'pep rally in black tie' because it's the one time of year that theater students, teachers and parents from all over the Hudson Valley gather to celebrate all of the amazing talent we have in this community," Rudess said. "It's always wonderful to hear the music start and then to hear the screaming and the celebration starts."
Peekskill High School was nominated for three Metros, Outstanding Instrumentalist, Dance Performance and Costume Design but did not take home any awards. Yorktown's Lakeland High School was nominated for two awards, Outstanding Instrumentalist and Outstanding Duet but did not win any awards.
Rudess said there were many standout performances this year that made the competition very tough. But it's not about who wins or loses, she said.
"Whether they win or lose, it's a celebration of all of the incredible talent we have here," she said. "We had a great night."
