Hollow Brook Trail Will Mark Grand Opening In Cortlandt

CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- Talk about perfect timing: the town of Cortlandt is unveiling its newest hiking venue just as the woods are exploding with the glorious reds, oranges and yellows of autumn.

The grand opening of the Hollow Brook Trail is set for 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20.

The trail traverses about 20 of the 70 acres deeded to the town by the Hollow Brook Golf Club off Oregon Road, according to the town’s recreation and conservation director, John Palmiotto.

It is currently less than a mile long, runs on a hillside behind the club, and probably could be categorized as being moderately difficult, steepness-wise.

The town plans to create loops and other trails on the land either later this year, or early next year.

The path was blazed and marked by the Recreation and Conservation Department and a group of volunteers from the department’s advisory board, Palmiotto said.

They included Leigh Draper, who works at the Teatown Lake Reservation, a nature preserve and education center in Ossining; Mike Huvane, Tino Martin, a Scenic Hudson volunteer who is retired from the Westchester County Parks System; .and Pete Revolo.

Dogs are allowed on the trail as long as they are on a leash, Palmiotto said.

The trailhead is in Putnam Valley. To get there from, say, Peekskill, follow Oregon Road East, go left on Oscawana Lake Road, left on Hollow Brook Road, left on Anton Place and follow it to the end.

There is a small parking area and a sign.
