Hurricane Sandy: Find Shelter, Wi-Fi, Ice In Yorktown

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – The Yorktown Community and Cultural Center (YCCC) at 1974 Commerce St. will serve as the main shelter during Hurricane Sandy for those looking for power, hot showers and more, said Yorktown Public Safety Officer Larry Eidelman.

The YCCC will act as a shelter for those in need.

The shelter will open at noon Tuesday and be available for residents without power or heat.

Town officials have already placed a generator in the building in anticipation of the storm. Yorktown Police Chief Daniel McMahon said if any residents plan on taking shelter at the YCCC, they should prepare their “goodie bags" now. Residents should bring clothing, money, coins, bedding, hygiene items and, most importantly, medical supplies.

If space runs out at the YCCC or it becomes flooded, the local school districts have already agreed to loan out buildings. Eidelman asked residents to monitor the town’s website, area radio stations and news outlets for storm updates.

McMahon said the town had already begun to make phone calls to special needs residents whose mobility is restricted by disability and asked that they make preparations to move them.

“We don’t have the manpower to move every resident in the town of Yorktown to a different location,” he said. ”These are arrangements that loved ones should be making or should have already made.”

Supervisor Michael Grace said dry ice will likely be limited after the storm, but pick-up for Consolodated Edison customers will be at the Jefferson Valley Mall and at the Triangle Center for NYSEG customers.

“Do not listen to rumors,” Grace said. “Those two locations will be the only locations.”

Wi-Fi hotspots in town include Panera at 6 Triangle Center, Starbucks at 1932 Commerce St., John C. Hart Library at 1130 East Main St., Panera at 3083 East Main St., Barnes & Noble in Cortlandt Town Center at 3089 East Main St. and the Jefferson Valley Mall at 650 Lee Blvd. Optimum costumers can also locate hotspots on the company’s website.
