At approximately 3:52 p.m. Saturday, the Arlington Fire District, LaGrange Fire District, and Mobile Life Support Services were dispatched to the Wappinger Creek in the area of the Stanley Still Sports Park for a water rescue emergency.
A second kayak, also operated by a Nyack resident, capsized in the water, was also identified and it was quickly determined the second kayaker was able to swim to shore prior to FD arrival.
Because of the conditions, emergency responders outfitted with water rescue gear had to deploy a rope system across the creek and use an inflatable rescue boat to extricate and safely bring the unidentified woman back to shore.
The rescue operation was completed in less than an hour from the initial dispatch and there were no reported civilian or emergency responder injuries, according to the Arlington Fire District.
Emergency responders were also able to recover both kayaks.
Both kayakers said it was their first time on the Wappingers Creek in that area, the Arlington Fire District said.
The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the incident.
Yesterday (April 7th), personnel from the Arlington Fire District and LaGrange Fire District took part in joint swift water rescue training exercises on another section of the Wappinger Creek. The Arlington Fire District, LaGrange Fire District, and City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department have personnel that, as part of a joint special operations team, are specially trained and equipped to respond to such incident types.
