Lakeland Class Leaders Praise Schoolmates

Colleen Riordan and Meghan McGowan with Lakeland High School Principal Cheryl Camp.

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. — Lakeland High School Valedictorian Meghan McGowan and Salutatorian Colleen Riordan are looking forward to leading the Class of 2012 down the aisle of the Westchester County Center Saturday morning.

McGowan, who served as one of the school's Board of Education student representatives this year, will be studying chemistry in the fall at College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts.

"I am extremely honored to be able to represent my class. There are so many outstanding and talented students in Lakeland, so it's a huge honor for me," she said. "I want the message to be positive. ... We have to take risks to achieve our goals."

Riordan, who will be majoring in biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame, said she will talk to her classmates about "remembering the changes we have gone through throughout high school, and about how many more changes we are about to go through, and how to deal with those changes."

"There are so many amazing people in our grade, from athletes to musicians to artists, and I am proud to be a part of this class," she said. "I cannot wait to see how successful everyone will end up."
