BUCHANAN—Offsite electricity running to Indian Point Nuclear Power Plants was partially knocked out last night, likely due to a nearby lightning strike. The power was believed to be lost from a switchyard across the street, and was supplemented by diesel generators. Indian Point Unit 3 reduced power to 70 percent following last night’s power outage.
No equipment was damaged by the lightning strike, and power was fully restored about an hour later. Indian Point Unit 2 was not affected and remained online, continuing to operate at full power.
Indian Point Energy Center is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity primarily for home and businesses in New York City and Westchester County.
