In addition to having successfully defended numerous municipalities and public officials in Civil Rights lawsuits, McDermott has served as Chief Deputy Corporation Counsel for the City of Yonkers, Deputy Corporation Counsel for the City of Peekskill, Senior Assistant Westchester County Attorney and Village Attorney for the Village of Mamaroneck.
He has also written numerous articles for various legal journals.
McDermott is currently a member of Board of Directors of the Westchester County Bar Association and also serves as the Town Justice for the Town of Somers.
