Mother's Day Has Yorktown Merchants Hopping

YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Every day is Mother's Day, according to moms everywhere, but this Sunday is when special attention is shown to women with children.

In Yorktown, business owners are busy helping kids and husbands choose the right gift.

Yorktown Jewelers, located in the Roma Building, is donating 10% of its proceeds from Saturday's sales to Alliance for Safe Kids while also entertaining customers with a mariachi band from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"We're calling it a Mother's Day Serenade," said owner Myron Ruales. "We're also having a champagne toast with every purchase. A mother is special and people like to celebrate the occasion."

Ruales said business has been steady with customers spending an average of $100 to $300 on a wide variety of jewelry, including personalized items with birthstones and children's names.

"We always have excellent prices and we're offering sales for Mother's Day," he said. "We're expecting the bulk of business to be on Saturday since most people are off Saturday. People are buying though, thank God."

Anyone shopping for unusual items can visit Wishes, located on Commerce St., which describes itself as "a treasure trove of great finds at great prices."

Owner Debbie Zapakin said customers can choose between bath and body products, vases, candles, cosmetic bags, jewelry and scarves.

"There's always something different," she said. "If you come in one day, the next time you come in you'll find something new. You never know what you'll find in here."

Of course, you can't go wrong honoring your mother with flowers, and that's what many people are doing, according to Michael Anderson, owner of The Country Florist, who noted many customers are insisting the flowers be delivered before Mother's Day.

"They're worried it won't get there in time," said Anderson, who has six drivers on the road delivering 400 to 500 flower orders over Mother's Day weekend.

Anderson said the average customer is spending about $60 during what is the busiest time of the year for florists. He is looking forward to Monday.

"I can sleep for two days," Anderson quipped while taking another call for pretty posies.
