YORKTOWN, N.Y. Just the mention of ice cream will likely bring a smile to most peoples faces. Count Michael Daly as one of those people who can't get enough of the frozen treat and now he has his own place to satisfy his craving seven days a week.
About two weeks ago, Daly, his wife Mary Beth and fellow Somers residents Kevin and Teresa McKenna brought soft serve frozen yogurt and ice cream back to downtown Yorktown with their new sweet shop Twist, located at the intersection of routes 35, 118 and 202 in the Roma Building.
"I love ice cream. It's just one of my simple pleasures," said Daly, who is also an Allstate Insurance agent in Yorktown. "I've always enjoyed watching children eat ice cream. That's one of the memories I have as a kid. It's a fun thing and we want to have fun while we're doing it."
In the planning stages for about six months, Daly said he and his partners looked at approximately half a dozen locations before settling on the Yorktown storefront, which is a short distance from where Carvel was a popular destination for decades before closing a few years ago.
"We wanted to do something locally and we found this spot," Daly said. "I feel like we're in the center of town. I felt this area needed a shop like this. This is exactly what I wanted."
Twist offers 15 different flavors of non-fat frozen yogurt, such as Outrageous Orange, New York Cheesecake and Cable Car Chocolate, along with vanilla and chocolate soft serve ice cream. There are also more than 60 different toppings for customers to salivate over.
The shop is set up with self-serve stations and the cost is by the ounce, with the average price ranging between $4 and $6.
"We didn't want to follow everyone else's formula. We wanted to create our own store and be as creative as we could," Daly said. "I think it's a new trend. People like to control their own experience."
Patricia Eskin of Mount Vernon, sharing an outing with her granddaughter, Grace, 12, said Twist has all the right ingredients to be successful.
"It's an amazing place. It's going to be a howling success," she said. "It's a blast. It's an absolute blast. It's like a magnet. It pulls people in."
Grace Eskin agreed as she enjoyed a homemade sundae, saying, "It's really good. They have the best toppings."
