New Postmaster John Macina, Jr., is making a routine trip to the Post Office a more interesting and informative experience.

"North Salem is such a tight-knit community that I want the post office to reflect that friendly character," Macina said.

Part of his plan is to create a more personal town friendly environment. A display of North Salem memorabilia will welcome town residents as part of this new makeover. Currently the display features a collection of vintage milk bottles that represent some of the many dairies that were a thriving industry in North Salem during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

In those days there were more cows than horses. The milk was brought to the train stations in Croton Falls and Purdy's and shipped to Borden's and Purdy's factories for processing into condensed milk.

Some of the large farms that spread over the landscape were Northshire Farm, (now Chase Meadows), Keeler, High Meadows and Charles Nichols.

The display also features an assemblage of archival photos of early North Salem post offices. Some of the buildings are still standing and have become important landmarks in the town's history.

Cynthia Curtis, president of The North Salem Historical Society said: "The Society is happy to share these artifacts with North Salem residents in the hope that they will encourage a greater interest in our town's history and make them proud of its heritage."

The North Salem Historical Society houses myriad of town artifacts and plans to display them periodically at the Post Office to provide a comprehensive overview of the town's historical importance.

The North Salem Historical Society is in "The White Elephant", an historic building at 81 Keeler Lane, North Salem. For more information, visit: www.nshs.info
