MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. – A major hospital merger is in the works as Northern Westchester Hospital has signed a letter of intent to explore joining the North Shore-LIJ Health System.

The letter allows the hospitals to begin the process with the goal of finalizing a merger later this year.

Northern Westchester Hospital’s Board Chairman Judge Robert Spolzino said North Shore-LIJ can provide it with the resources to adapt to the “monumental changes currently under way in the healthcare industry.”

Finding more efficiencies and reducing costs are at the heart of any merger. Joel Seligman, president and CEO of Northern Westchester Hospital, said it is also looking for a partner to “provide us with the ability to further develop the medical expertise and leading edge technology that our community has come to expect from NWH.

“Our board and leadership team believe that North Shore-LIJ is the right partner to help us accomplish this and we are looking forward to working with them in developing a regional health care strategy."

North Shore-LIJ President and CEO Michael J. Dowling trumpeted NWH’s “high-quality, technologically advanced and cost-effective” care.

“We are excited to be taking this first step toward becoming partners and we look forward to working closely with the hospital’s leadership team to build upon these strengths and further define our strategy for serving communities throughout the Hudson Valley,” he said.

Mergers in the hospital landscape have been on the rise of late.

White Plains Hospital recently partnered with Montefiore Health System and will become the "tertiary hub of Montefiore’s Westchester network."

I am surprised that there is no mention of the potential North Shore-LIJ - Phelps Memorial merger that was announced recently. If both of these mergers go thru this seems to be a favorable situation for mid-Westchester clients in terms of flexibility.

Sorry, why is this "breaking news" in New Canaan? Hope you're not going the way of The Patch...
