The challenge has gone on viral and been done by celebrities like Anna Kendrick and LeBron James, in honor of Richard Pringle, a patient at Cedar Manor since 2012.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has raised more than $2.3 million for the national ALS Association since July 29.

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

The idea for Cedar Manor's challenge came from Victoria Gallipani, Pringle's physical therapist.

"We want to raise awareness for ALS," Gallipani said. "We want to raise money in honor of Mr. Pringle."

Gallipani said Pringle and other patients have helped open their eyes to ALS and Pringle was excited to see the challenge.  Antoinette Miraglin, an occupational therapist, is hoping they can raise more money to make it easier for people with ALS to communicate.

She said she has enjoyed seeing her friends on Facebook take the challenge and was happy to see so many willing participants at Cedar Manor.

"It's just amazing," Miraglin said. "It lets us see what we can do."

Cedar Manor challenged Burke Rehabilitation Center, Sky View Rehabilitation and Health Care and Bethel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center as part of the ice bucket challenge.
