YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Phoenix House will close its Westchester Academy in Shrub Oak in June and lay off 56 workers, effective June 3, according to lohud.com.

The first Phoenix House Academy opened in Yorktown in 1983 and the drug-treatment organization operates two other academies in East Hampton and Brooklyn, according to lohud.com.

Phoenix House operates more than 20 residential and outpatient programs for adults and adolescents in New York, treating about 2,000 individuals daily, lohud reported

Karen Sodomick, Phoenix House's vice president of marketing and communication, said on Tuesday that the decision to close was difficult but necessary because of changing youth-sentencing and residential-treatment trends, according to lohud.

Sodomick said courts are sending fewer teens to residential treatment centers and funding organizationsrs prefer drug treatment programs that are closer to youths' families in New York City, according to the article.
