Planners Recommend Rezoning for Yorktown Winery

YORKTOWN, N.Y. - The Yorktown Planning Board is recommending the property that houses The Winery at St. George in Shrub Oak be rezoned.

The site of the historic former Catholic church is currently zoned residential (R-120) and planners are suggesting that be changed to transitional, which would give the Town Board authority over site plan approval.

The applicant, Tom DeChiaro, had initially sought a rezoning to C-2 (commercial) but some town officials, such as Councilman Nick Bianco, discouraged that since a C-2 designation would give DeChiaro the option to demolish the church. DeChiaro has said he was not opposed to the transitional zone.

Planners also reviewed a revised site plan that shifted parking on the east side of the property further from the wetlands, which received the thumbs up from the Conservation Board, and recommended an extension of the sidewalk along Route 6.

There have also been discussions about a possible land swap with the town that would protect the wetlands and provide the winery with additional parking spaces.

The rezoning request has appeared on the Town Board's agenda for several meetings and is listed once again on Tuesday's night's meeting.
