The incident began around 2:30 a.m. when a City of Poughkeepsie police officer was getting gas at the Mobil gas station across from City Hall and observed a vehicle traveling west on Mansion Street at a high rate of speed, said City of Poughkeepsie Police Det. Lt. Matt Clark.

Due to road conditions and the officer being out of his vehicle, he was unable to follow the vehicle, which made a left onto Columbus Drive going south towards the Mid-Hudson Bridge, said Clark.

A short time later, the department received a 911 call reporting a woman stabbed in front of 130 Mansion St. The same officer from the Mobil Gas station responded and found a 39-year-old Hyde Park woman with a stab wound to her neck, according to Clark. She was transported to a local hospital where she underwent surgery and is listed as being in very critical condition, Clark said.

The description of the vehicle used by the person who was seen fleeing the scene of the stabbing matched the vehicle observed by the officer making the left from Mansion onto Columbus Drive heading towards the Mid-Hudson Bridge, Clark said.

A short time after the stabbing was reported, two people were killed following a two-car crash that closed the Mid-Hudson Bridge around 2:30 a.m. early Wednesday, according to authorities.

It is believed that the vehicle that fled the stabbing and the vehicle involved in the serious motor vehicle crash are the same vehicle, Clark said.

The accident is being investigated by the New York State Police.
