In what he said was a frustrating week for the school district, power was out for three days forcing the high school to be closed. Power was finally restored Wednesday afternoon.
"The kids are glad to be back in school," Monahan said. "Yesterday (Wednesday) we were ready to start and then the power went out again."
In an e-mail sent to families, Monahan said he understood parents concern about students missing school. Monahan said teachers communicated with students via e-mail about assignments they should be working on while school was closed.
"We believe the power problem is solved, but should this situation continue, we are developing alternate ways to provide instruction," Monahan said. "Obviously, any solution we develop will not be the same as having our students and teachers together and it will be a last resort."
The power went out at the high school on Sunday afternoon, and after a NYSEG inspection, school was closed for Monday, Monahan said.
The district scheduled a three-hour delay for Tuesday after a damaged cable was repaired late Monday.
"Shortly after the staff arrived on Tuesday, the power went off again and we closed school," Monahan said.
A second cable was repaired and a regular opening was scheduled for Wednesday, Monahan said.
As the students were arriving Wednesday, the power went out again. Students were sent home about 9:30 a.m., Monahan said.
About noon Wednesday the power came back on, Monahan said.
"I am not an engineer, but I have been told that the problem has been in the three cables that connect the building to the NYSEG pole," Monahan said. "All three have now been repaired. Our own staff and NYSEG employees have worked extremely hard under difficult circumstances."
