YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Yorktown is seeking citizen volunteers for a new group being assembled to assist during large-scale emergencies.

Yorktown Police Officer Larry Eidelman is coordinating the Yorktown Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and is encouraging residents 18 years and older to consider joining.

"It will promote the people of Yorktown helping people of Yorktown," Eidelman said. "We do live in a wonderful community and people want to help. I think you'll see tremendous things from it."

CERT will provide a large base of residents police can call on during such events as power outages, disaster medical operations and temporary shelter situations. Members will also check on the welfare of older and homebound residents.

"It will help our Police Department act more efficiently," said Town Supervisor Michael Grace.

A kickoff meeting for CERT will be held in late May or early June. Anyone interested in taking part in CERT can contact Eidelman at leidelman@yorktownpd.org or (914)- 962-4141, ext. 163.
