Seton Church To Celebrate 50th Anniversary

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. – St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish will celebrate the start of its 50th anniversary on Sunday with a special 11 a.m. Mass led by Bishop Dennis Sullivan, vicar general of the Archdiocese of New York.

At 9 a.m. Saturday a reconditioned bronze monument of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and two of her children will be unveiled in the front of the church , 1377 E. Main St., Shrub Oak.

The parish was dedicated on June 22, 1963, at St. George's Church on Route 6 in Mohegan Lake, which was built in 1912 as a family chapel by resident Aimee LaFargee Heins. The building is now The Winery at St. George and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is credited with creating the Catholic school system in America and was the first native-born American to become a saint, in 1975. She was beatified, the first step toward sainthood, in 1963, the year the parish was named in her honor.

The Golden Jubilee Committee at Seton has scheduled a variety of events to commemorate the anniversary, including a pilgrimage to New York City to "walk in the footsteps" of St. Elizabeth; a trip to the mother house of the Sisters of Charity; and a trip to Livorno, Italy, where Seton's husband died and was buried in 1803.

Also planned are a golf outing, anniversary dinner/dance, parish picnic, Communion breakfast, and piano and choral concerts.
