Taconic Amvets Bridge Reopens Tuesday Night

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – The northbound AMVETS Bridge on the Taconic State Parkway will reopen late Tuesday night and be ready for Wednesday morning’s commute following a six-month construction project, the State Department of Transportation announced.

“This is truly a momentous occasion,” NYSDOT Commissioner Joan McDonald said during a Tuesday morning press conference. “We are opening the AMVETS Bridge over the Croton Reservoir a month ahead of schedule.”

The $26 million project to rehabilitate the Taconic over the New Croton Reservoir began on March 26 and shut down northbound Taconic lanes from Pines Bridge Road in New Castle to Underhill Avenue in Yorktown. The bridge was scheduled to reopen on Nov. 9.

The construction company that worked on the bridge, Tutor Perini Corporation, will receive $33,000 for each day it finished early, or more than $900,000. It could have been penalized $33,000 for each day after the deadline construction lasted.

“We needed the assistance of an unrepresented group of people today and that was the commuters on the Taconic State Parkway, who behaved absolutely spectacularly during this,” said James Laing, president of Tutor Perini, who said the project was fairly “incident free” among the commuters.

During the project, traffic was re-routed to the southbound Taconic into four lanes with a concrete barrier between two lanes in each direction. Over the bridge, the speed limit was lowered to 35 miles per hour.

“We utilized a number of traffic incident management techniques, including a guaranteed five-minute response by a trooper to any incident in the construction zone,” said New York State Police Major Michael A. Kopy.

Construction work included in the project was new steel hangers, deck support, concrete deck, railings, installation of a new guide rail and resurfacing pavement on the roadway on each end of the bridge.

“The work we have completed here on the Taconic is important and timely, and will extend the life of this bridge by 50 years,” McDonald said.
