YORKTOWN, N.Y. – The Yorktown Daily Voice will head into the new year by counting down, in no particular order, the top 10 stories from 2012 .

A story that directly affected many readers in 2012 was the closing and re-opening of AMVETS Bridge on the Taconic State Parkway.

On March 26 , the New York State Department of Transportation embarked on a $26 million project to rehabilitate the bridge over the New Croton Reservoir. The construction shut down northbound lanes on the parkway from Pines Bridge Road in New Castle to Underhill Avenue in Yorktown.

During the project, northbound traffic was re-routed to two of the four southbound lanes of the parkway and separated by a concrete barrier. The speed limit on the bridge was lowered to 35 miles per hour.

The bridge project included new steel hangers, deck supports, a concrete deck, railings, installation of a new guide rail and resurfacing of the roadway at each end of the bridge.

The work was scheduled to be completed by Nov. 9, but the DOT pleasantly surprised commuters when it re-opened the bridge on Oct. 2, more than a month ahead of schedule.
