YORKTOWN, N.Y. The Yorktown Town Board will hold a public hearing for increasing the speed limit on Underhill Avenue from 30 to 40 mph Tuesday evening.
A local law would be needed to change the speed limit proposed on Underhill Avenue from the Taconic State Parkway to Route 118. The speed limit was once 40 mph but it was lowered to 30 mph roughly 20 years ago when the town took control of the road from the county.
The board discussed changing the speed limit at their first meeting of the new year in January, armed with information from the Yorktown Police Department, showing that the average speed on the road was 48 mph when the segment of the road was tested in 2008. During the time in which the road was surveyed in November to December 2008, 17,685 cars traveled on the road per day, the board said.
Yorktown residents can share their opinion at the public hearing or send letters to be read at the board meeting.
