YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Business-owner and candidate for town council, Dave Paganelli challenged Yorktown residents to shop locally in Yorktown Friday.
I am deeply concerned about our immediate economic future here in Yorktown and I want to help do something about it, he said. Today I am launching a shop Yorktown, shop local program. I am challenging every Yorktown resident, to make immediate changes to their buying and shopping habits, to benefit our town.
Paganelli stressed shopping locally will take some of the tax burden off of homeowners, and will help to attract new businesses.
Commercial space is extremely important to our taxpayers, he said. Commercial entities pay a large portion of our property taxes and our school taxes, thats less that we have to pay as homeowners. Empty commercial spaces hurt that equation, no revenues, no rent collected, no potential new taxes paid, period. We can help change this. We have to keep our local business viable, doing so contributes t our towns fiscal health. Strong businesses provide jobs, pay property taxes and make our town attractive, and a great place to do business. This in turn will attract new businesses, and will help keep our property taxes stable.
The candidate challenged residents to go out and buy something locally that they would otherwise buy online or elsewhere, and challenged residents to buy something in Yorktown three times in the next month to help local businesses.
Im calling on all local residents to make small changes to their purchasing habits right now. Today, I challenge you to make one purchase locally that you havent done in the past, this could be a stop to a local grocer, or a purchase at a local storefront, he said. Next month make three purchases in Yorktown that youve been doing elsewhere. This could include food shopping, dining at one of our local restaurants, and using one of our local service providers.
Paganelli said that if each one of the thirteen-thousand households in Yorktown made just one $25 purchase this week in Yorktown, it would bring an additional $325,000 in revenue. If each household made three $25 purchases next month, it would bring in almost a million dollars.
The business-owner explained that he was launching the shop local, shop Yorktown campaign and soon residents would be seeing signs reminding them to shop local in local businesses.
Lets not lose the businesses that we have, and just as importantly lets fight hard to attract new businesses, lets show prospective businesses that we take care of our own because we shop local and we shop Yorktown, Paganelli said. This is our challenge, our community depends upon it.
