YORKTOWN, N.Y. - The Yorktown Heights Engine Company #1 is accepting applications for membership, along with teenagers to join its Junior Corps.
The Junior Corps has been a part of the 103-year-old, all volunteer fire department since 2003. The corps consists of 20 youth, ages 15-17, both male and female, who participate in various training exercises and community events, as well as responding on apparatus.
All corps members are issued their own set of gear. At 15, a corps member is considered probationary and activities are limited to training and helping around the firehouse. At 16, they are elevated to an exterior firefighter and can respond to emergencies with limited firefighting participation. At 17, the members can take the New York State Firefighter One course, which is the basic course all volunteer firefighters are required to take.
The Junior Corps also has fundraisers, such as the pancake breakfast, and helps during parades and carnivals. Members meet every Wednesday night to train. Any teen that lives within the Yorktown Fire District is eligible to apply.
