YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- History was brought back to life by 300 fourth-graders, teachers and parents at Crompond Intermediate School in Yorktown Tuesday.
The school staged its 10th annual Revolutionary War encampment with students dressed as British and French forces and groups of Native Americans, experiencing what times were like in the 1700s.
"This was our nation's struggle for independence," said teacher John Pastore, who has led the much anticipated event for years and donned a General outfit.
Students participated in several workshops, including colonial dancing, military artillery, espionage, songs, cooking and Revolutionary War Jeopardy. The costumes were made by some of the 60 parents that participated.
Principal Kenneth Levy said over the course of the year students earned merits, which determined what rank they were during the encampment.
"This is real life. This is colonial activity," Levy said. "The kids do a lot of studying about this. They get it. This is a whole community. We call ourselves the 'We School' because we all work together."
Joseph Ryan of the Living History Education Foundation also took part in the program. Levy noted a month ago students and staff enjoyed Colonial Day.
