Yorktown Gym Crosses Training and Relationships

YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- While many Yorktown residents may try different workouts looking for the perfect one, business owners Glenn and Jackie Ettere did the same, but it was to find the perfect type of workout for their clients.

The power-duo started out as friends who simply owned their own personal-training business together. They now own Crossfit on Front Street and have married their love of small, intimate work-out sessions with intense work outs that can be customized for any experience.

“It’s all about being comfortable, and realizing there’s not this one size fits all approach, it just won’t work,” said Jackie. “And when we do it this way, in smaller groups, people are able to get more out of it. We cheer them on, and so do the friends they make in the classes, so it’s a win-win.”

It’s obvious just from a walk around the studio, the two are passionate and energetic about what they do. The pair practice what they preach and they do the workouts themselves to know them inside and out.

Jackie said she enjoys the intimate setting not just because people will cheer each other on during sessions, but because she feels as if she’s doing more than training them. There have been times when she will text or call someone who missed a class acting more than a trainer and similar to a “gym buddy.”

“I like that by doing this we can act as kind of like a support system, we’re not some overgrown place where we don’t know your name,” Glenn said.

Glenn broke his neck at a young age as an athlete, and Jackie, suffered from a compound fracture. Both injuries halted them from their activities for a while realized that athletics was more than just simple practices and competitions.

“It’s always kept me pointed in the right direction, and I didn’t always realize it at the time,” he said.

Crossfit works by having participants show up for classes at a certain time, although they don’t necessarily know the routine or what to expect. At the class, random physical challenges are written out on a board with either repetitions or weights that each person has to complete so that things never get boring, or too practiced.

“We’re realistic, we have to balance things and realize there’s more to being healthy than just working out, but what we try to teach isn’t just working out, it’s a routine and ways to train your body so that your whold self will be fit.”

The two previously owned their own studio called Personalized Fitness for 11 years and said it’s that personal and intimate group setting that they still get although they now run group classes.

“People know us as Glenn and Jackie, and have followed us from our personal training studio—and we know them by their names and we’ve all become friendly,” Jackie said. “And that’s how we can make this work so it’s a group working, but it’s still personal.”
