Yorktown Historical Society Raising Funds For Monument

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – The Yorktown Historical Society is in "full fundraising mode" as it works toward constructing a monument commemorating the Battle of Pines Bridge 231 years ago.

The 7- to 8-foot-tall monument will face Presbyterian Church and cemetery from Downing Park. The remains of Col. Christopher Greene, one of 38 soldiers who were killed in the May 14, 1781, skirmish, are interred at the cemetery.

The idea for the monument, which the Historical Society is hoping to build by May 2014, was first proposed a few years ago by Yorktown Police Officer Michael Kahn, a Revolutionary War history buff.

"It's something that will memoralize the suffering and sacrifices that were made," Thomas Travis, a trustee of the Historical Society, told the Yorktown Town Board this week.

The Historical Society needs to raise $300,000. One of its fundraising efforts is selling bricks for a pathway that will lead to the monument. Bricks can be purchased here .

The Yorktown Historical Society was formed in 1956 under former Supervisor John Downing. Two years later, Westchester County donated 25 acres to Yorktown that became Downing Park. In 1963, the town purchased additional land to extend the park.
