YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- World War II veteran Anthony Marzzo had quite the birthday party on Wednesday.

Marzzo, whose birthday is Nov. 11, celebrated his 102nd birthday and Veterans Day at The Country House in Yorktown Heights. Marzzo and other veterans received proclamations from The American Legion and the Town of Yorktown.

During World War II, Marzzo was stationed at Fort Dix before being sent to Europe as part of the 101st Airborne Division.

For his birthday, Marzzo received a cake and was given a state flag that flew over the capitol building.

"I never figured I would have such a good time," Marzzo said.

Marzzo said he did hope he would be able to see his great grandchild soon.

Supervisor Michael Grace said getting to honor veterans was one of his favorite parts of being a supervisor.

"Veterans are the backbone of this country," Grace said. "Without them our country doesn't survive. They made such a great sacrifice."

Gerald Knapp of the American Legion Post 1009 detailed some of the activities the legion is involved with in Yorktown. The legion created a Veterans Commemorative Park that has engraved bricks honoring loved ones and renders military honors at funeral homes. They also visit veterans at nursing homes and go to schools to educate children about their service.

After honoring the veterans, Knapp finished his ceremony with a special toast.

For the service you have rendered to your country

For the loneliness you may have endured serving far away from your families

For the pain you may have suffered

For all these things we thank you

For all these things we honor you

For all these things we salute you.
