“We have to draw a line,” said Supervisor Michael Grace. “This is big stuff. People are putting their trees on the curb thinking we’re going to take them.”
Highway Superintendent Eric DiBartolo said the debris must be bundled with a strong cord, and branches cannot be longer than 48 inches or exceed 5 inches in diameter. DiBartolo said stumps are prohibited because they cannot be run through a shredder.
Large trees and logs resting curbside can become a hazard for drivers and makes it especially difficult snow plows, DiBartolo said.
“We’ve got to get it off the road. Because if we don’t get it off the road it will be going through people’s front windows,” he said. “If you’re going 30 miles per hour and you hit this log, it becomes a projectile.”
DiBartolo said the most helpful thing residents can do with their large trees is to leave them where they are. He said town crews will be out this week to mark trees that are in the town's right-of-way and compile a list of trees that need to be cleaned up.
After the list is compiled, the town will be hiring an outside company to individually meet with the property owners, who would have to pay a fee to get the tree removed.
