Yorktown Looks At 'Perfect Location' For Dog Park

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Granite Knolls Park in Shrub Oak is being explored by the Yorktown Town Board as a possible home for a dog park.

Specifically, the park would take the place of the old barn on Stony Street, which the board is looking to tear down, said Supervisor Michael Grace.

“The idea up there is, actually everybody’s looking for a dog park, and we have a perfect location,” he said at Tuesday night’s board meeting. “So I think we’re going to move toward that.”

Grace said he and his fellow Town Board members went to the site a few weeks ago to assess the barn and look at the work that needed to be done. He said the area was so unkempt that they needed chain saws and weed whackers just to gain access to the barn.

The board unanimously agreed Tuesday night to open up bidding for the demolition of the barn. Grace said the board set aside $25,000 in this year’s budget for work on the Granite Knolls property and expects the demolition to cost around $1,400.

Council member Nick Bianco joked about oil tanks being buried at the site, which was a controversial topic when the town demolished the Holland Sporting Club earlier this year. Grace, though, said this demolition has little environmental ramifications and “is a completely different project than the Holland Sporting Club.”
