YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Here are a few of the top stories from this week in the Yorktown Heights area:
- A funeral was held in Yorktown on Friday for Joe Cahill, a former Yorktown Heights resident who was shot to death April 28 in New Orleans. New Orleans police told the Times-Picayune newspaper that Cahill was shot by a homeowner after reportedly running into the home at about 2:15 p.m. that day. The New Orleans Coroner’s Office later confirmed that Cahill was dead.
- The driver who allegedly struck and killed a Yorktown man in November has been charged with criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving and marijuana possession, according to the Westchester County District Attorney’s office. Brett Nelson of Yorktown was 18 when he struck and killed 57-year-old Randy Zapakin at 8 p.m. Nov. 8 while Zapakin was walking his dog on Farm Walk Road in Yorktown, the DA said.
- Yorktown's own Chuck Newman was the guest of honor at the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation's "Cocktails For A Cure." The third-annual fundraiser was held Thursday at the Vintage Restaurant and Lounge in White Plains. This year's celebration honored Newman and 30 years of research for the PKD Foundation.
