Yorktown Police Announce Arrests Connected to Youth Deaths

YORKTOWN, N.Y. — Yorktown Police Chief Daniel McMahon has announced that Yorktown Police, in conjunction with Westchester County and the New York City Police Department, were able to arrest two men who they believe dealt drugs in Yorktown, leading to accidental fatal overdoses of two Yorktown youths.

“This community has lost 17 young adults to drugs, and/or alcohol. We have had nine fatal overdoses, three suicides and five fatal DWI accidents,” McMahon said. “In March 2011, we had a double-fatal overdose.”

McMahon, who addressed the town board during Tuesday’s meeting, said when the police department hears of a case such as the incident that took the lives of the two young people, they treat it as a homicide until they know further.

“It’s very difficult to watch young people pass away, not to mention how it effects the families, but with that in mind, the department went a little further, we didn’t close the case out,” McMahon said. “We looked to try and see if we could possibly hold accountable the people who sold the drugs.”

McMahon said in total, 21 arrests were made in this ring of drug busts. McMahon said the arrests could not relieve the families of the loss of their child, but he was pleased that something was done to send a message that Yorktown would not tolerate drug dealing in the community.

“I know this is no consolation to the families, but at least somebody is being punished for what happened here and hopefully it will give some comfort to the families,” McMahon said.
