YORKTOWN, N.Y.--Power to most traffic signals, schools, health-care facilities and several large residential areas in Yorktown has been restored as of Sunday morning, according to Yorktown Police.

"There are still many areas without power and much work to do" in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, police said in an alert message Sunday, but the Yorktown Police Department is actively coordinating with utility companies and other town departments to expedite the restoration process.

Gasoline shortages are expected to ease soon as power is being restored to many area gas stations and additional deliveries are on the way, police said. Residents can visit consumer-updated Gasbuddy for local gas prices and other station information and may report possible price gouging to the Westchester County Department of Consumer Protection at 914-995-2155.

Yorktown police remind residents that many roadways are still extremely dangerous and several major electrical repairs on broken utility poles and other elements of the infrastructure have yet to be made. Police advise residents to assume all down wires are live and to keep within the limits defined by barricades and caution tape.

To report power outages or downed wires, Con Edison customers in Yorktown can call 800-752-6633 and NYSEG customers can call 800- 572-1131. Yorktown Cablevision customers with power but no cable services can call 800-305-2340.

General information including any additional dry ice and bottled water distribution schedules can be found here . Garbage collection for Yorktown will resume a normal schedule on Monday, according to police.

Police also informed residents that Westchester County has been added to the federal "Major Disaster Declaration," so it is now possible to apply for FEMA disaster assistance .

Yorktown Police encourage residents to subscribe to the Police Department’s e-mail alert list here to receive future updates on storm recovery efforts.
