Yorktown Police to Get a New Best Friend

YORKTOWN, N.Y. - The Yorktown Police Department will soon get a replacement for its beloved recently departed K-9 German shepherd Caesar.

Police Chief Daniel McMahon asked the town board Tuesday night for $10,000 to obtain a new four-legged friend, and board members said they were more than happy to oblige.

"Priceless. It's worth it," said Council member Terrence Murphy.

"It's part of your arsenal," said Supervisor Michael Grace. "I think they come in handy."

Yorktown has had a K-9 program since 1975 and two dogs for dozens of years, each one with its own specialty. McMahon said one K-9 is trained for drugs detection, while the other is trained for finding missing persons.

"The dogs are both trained for patrols and being partners to officers," McMahon said. "When you need them they are invaluable."

Caesar trained and was assigned to Police Officer Jason Swart for the last six years. Caesar died three weeks ago after suffering kidney failure.

The town board will officially approve the funding for a new K-9 in two weeks.

Meanwhile, McMahon discussed changing the existing Town Code entitled "Habitual Barking Dogs" to make it easier for police officers to issue warnings when receiving complaints.

"A dog can bark for 24 hours right in front of your window and we can't do anything about it," McMahon said.

Grace agreed to hold a public hearing on the issue but didn't express confidence in it passing muster in court.

"We'll put it up for a public hearing and see who barks," he said.
