YORKTOWN, N.Y.A Carmel woman drove drunk with two young children in the car and was involved in an accident on Route 35 in Yorktown that sent two other people to the hospital, Yorktown Police said.
Yorktown police arrested Virve Virtanen, 41, of Carmel Sunday afternoon and charged her with two counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child. The charges against Virtanen were upgraded to felonies because there was a 5-year-old and 2-year-old child in the car at the time of the incident.
According to police, they responded to a car accident at around 2:20 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they said they found that Virtanen had driven her 2010 eastbound on Route 35 and struck another car headed westbound. The passengers in that car were taken to Hudson Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Virtanen was arrested at the scene and transported to police headquarters. She was released on her own recognizance and due to appear in Yorktown Justice Court on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
