Yorktown Proud of Tree City USA Designation

YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Yorktown officials proudly boasted about the town's recent designation as a Tree City USA municipality during an Arbor Day ceremony at Town Hall on Friday.

Tree City USA is a a nationwide program sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation and federal Department of Agriculture to recognize municipalities that care about trees.

"It is telling the world Yorktown realizes the importance of its trees," said Bill Kellner of the Tree Conservation Advisory Commission. "I think this is a great honor for Yorktown. Yorktown is joining a rich tradition with deep roots."

The event also included certificates presented to fifth-graders at Crompond Elementary School and seven- and eight-year-olds from Brownie Troop 2733 who participated in a poster contest. The posters will be displayed at Town Hall for two weeks and the winners will be made into banners.

Meanwhile, pear trees and red buds were planted in Patriot Garden behind Town Hall.

"The town is very fortunate to have a lot of open space under the town's ownership," said Supervisor Michael Grace. "It's not just that we have trees. We have to have the right trees. It's a great town with a lot of great volunteers."
