Yorktown Relay for Life Raises Over $47,000

YORKTOWN, N.Y. - The 10 months of planning for Relay for Life in Yorktown paid off over the weekend as more than $47,000 was raised as part of the 14-hour event held Friday evening into Saturday morning at Jack DeVito Field.

For the last three years, Yorktown's efforts for the American Cancer Society have been among the top fundraisers in the region. To date, Jane McCarthy, co-chair of the Relay, said $212,000 has been raised in Yorktown this year.

"What do you say to a community that has a Relay like the best of them? Thank you is just not enough," McCarthy said. "The purple power, the passion, the chain of hope, ... the motorcycles, the Hope and Cure on the hill, the survivor reception, the butterfly release, the smiles and tears from family members, old and new friends, rainbows and the sense of community on that crowded field from the babies to the seniors ... I say Yorktown Relay rocks!"

There was one moment at the tail end of the event that really struck McCarthy. It was 5 a.m. and all the luminaria that lined the track had to be picked up. A team from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School in Shrub Oak supporting the Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Center came to the rescue.

"We were tired. There was a group of kids who were walking around the track with a lot of energy. I asked if they would help and they jumped on it," McCarthy said. "We got them a shopping cart, they made a plan and they were happy to do it. They had heard Monica Garrigan and I speak about the Relay at their school and decided to get involved. That moment brought me chills and tears."
