Yorktown Salon Snips Hair in Armonk for Donations

Hairdressers from Yorktown's Lorese Salon and Spa and Tuckahoe's Salon Delian staffed a line of chairs inside Valhalla’s Kenisco School library Monday while students and faculty members took turns donating inches of their hair.

"I'm amazed by the response," Lorese owner Kathy Forese said. "It's such a selfless thing to do for such a great cause."

The cuts were for a good cause. All the hair was being donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, which makes wigs for cancer patients. Kensico School’s testing coordinator Claudia Floryshak began the event two years ago in memory of her mother, who died 20 years ago from cancer. She said the first hair donations included fewer than ten students though the number nearly tripled this year to 26 children and seven adults.

"The response has been overwhelming," Floryshak said.

Fourth grader Julianne Pisacane happily gave eight inches of her.  It wasn’t the first time she’s donated.

"I really like it," said Pisacane. "It feels good to be donating to something good."

Lorese Salon and Spa gives cancer patients makeovers each month through the Look Good Feel Better program. Floryshak visits the Yorktown salon often and said it helped her generate the idea for the school’s program.

Fifth grader Isabella Ruane sat down to the snipping sounds of scissors and donated eight inches of her hair. She said it was her very first haircut. She held long locks in her hands after and smiled as her friends stood nearby taking pictures of her.

"I'm shocked," she said. "I was really scared at first but I'm happy to donate my hair to a good cause."
