Yorktown Students Exceed Average On State Tests

YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Students in the Yorktown Central School District in grades three to eight far exceeded the state and Westchester County proficiency average in mathematics and English language arts (ELA) on tests given last April.

Overall, the state Education Department stated average scores on both exams were slightly higher than last year.

"There is some positive momentum in these numbers," said Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch.

"We're building a ladder, grade by grade, to college and career readiness," said Education Commissioner John King Jr.

On the math exam, statewide 64.8 percent of students in grades three-eight achieved a 3 or a 4, which exceeds proficiency. Yorktown students scored much higher in all grades.

In third-grade, 72.2 percent of the 227 students who took the exam scored a 3 or 4. In fourth-grade, 89.2 percent of the 269 students reached those levels; 77 percent of the 292 students in fifth-grade; 89 percent of the 319 students in sixth-grade; 88.7 percent of the 311 students in seventh-grade and 93.4 percent of the 305 students in eighth-grade.

On the ELA exam, statewide 55.1% of students in grades 3-8 achieved a 3 or 4. Once again, Yorktown students were superior.

In third-grade, 70.9 percent of students exceeded proficiency; 82.3 percent in fourth-grade; 79.4 percent in fifth-grade; 80.5 percent in sixth-grade; 77.8 percent in seventh-grade and 79.6 percent in eighth-grade.
