YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. Two Yorktown teens will perform Sept. 19 at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem.
Kristina Koller and Zerena Lupo will be onstage for Amateur Night at the Apollo, which has been going on for almost 80 years. Koller and Lupo have performed at the Yorktown Teen Centers First Fridays Café open mic night and at other local and national venues.
It is amazing that two of our First Fridays performers go on to Amateur Night at the Apollo, said Helena Rodriguez of the Yorktown Teen Center. Having both of them performing on the same night is incredible.
Koller will compete against eight other adult performers for the title of Super Top Dog and a grand prize of $10,000. Her fate will rest with the Apollo audience, which votes with an applause meter on who advances to the next round.
The 2012 Yorktown High School graduate plays guitar and ukulele and sings. She has performed at 12 Grapes Music & Wine Bar in Peekskill, MTK Tavern in Mount Kisco and The Winery at St. George in Mohegan Lake. She is currently majoring in jazz studies at The Hartt School in Hartford, Conn.
Lupo, an eighth-grader at Mildred E. Strang Middle School, will compete in the "Stars of Tomorrow." She has been writing poetry and playing guitar for six years. Lupo is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International and also performs regularly at events sponsored by the Yorktown Teen Center.
