Given the choice of doing nothing with the money, using it to reduce taxes, or spending it on infrastructure projects, 69 percent of the survey respondents said the money should be spent now for infrastructure projects, compared to only 25 percent who said the money should be used to reduce taxes. Six percent said the town should do nothing and leave the money in the town’s fund balance.
Given a choice of six broad categories of possible infrastructure projects, respondents were also asked to rank the six in importance. By far, road paving topped the list, with 51 percent of the respondents saying it was their top priority, followed by 22 percent who felt parks and recreation projects were their top priority.
The least important infrastructure projects were repairing town buildings at seven percent and building a new highway garage at eight percent.
According to Highway Superintendent David Paganelli, it costs between $100,000-$140,000 to pave a mile of road, the difference being the width of the road. This year, the Highway Department plans to spend $600,000 to pave 5-6 miles of road, with $250,000 coming from taxpayers and $350,000 from the state CHIPS program.
The town has approximately 200 miles of road and some roads haven’t been paved in over 20+ years. Asked if the $1.5 million should be used entirely for one project or split between their top two priorities, two-thirds of the respondents wanted to see the money split between their top two priorities, while one-third wanted the money used in its entirety for their top priority.
