Yorktown's Hilltop Hanover Farm Welcomes Cows For Homecoming

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- The official “Homecoming” for Hilltop Hanover cows Cricket, her mom Cocoa, her grandmother Clover and Cosmo, her half-brother was held on Saturday, Aug. 16. 

These four cows marked the return of cows to Hilltop Hanover Farm after an absence of 23 years – a reason to celebrate. The day was also dubbed “Milk and Cookies Day.”

Joining in the celebration were Details Residential Services, which donated water, Hudson Milk Co, which donated gallons of milk and Baked by Susan, which donated dozens of black and white cookies (the colors of the Dutch belted cows).

Now, according to the farm’s newly appointed education director Carol Lake, “The cows must earn their keep.” The “School Programs Fall, 2014” brochure, which details how Hilltop Hanover Farm’s classes meet STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, NYS MST (New York State Math, Science and Technology) standards, was just completed. 

The dairy science component will involve the four cows as they become acclimated to Hilltop Hanover. The science component will focus on the life cycle of the grass-fed cows. The science component will focus on the life cycle of the grass-fed cows. Students will discover what milk is made of and what those beneficial microbes in your yogurt really are. Also, students will learn how ice cream is made and watch cheese being made. Cows will also be milked.
