James I. O’Neill High School students and school employees are mourning the loss of a favorite teacher and coach who died Monday in an early morning car crash in the Town of Newburgh.

Christopher Page, 27, an English teacher at the Highland Falls school for more than three years, was killed driving his 2015 Dodge Charger north on Route 300 around 6:45 a.m. , when he failed to negotiate a curve and struck a utility police, according to Town of Newburgh Lt. James Nenni.

O'Neil Principal Debbie Brand said in a statement that a crisis team was available to the school for as long as needed: "As many of you know, Mr. Page did so much for our school and community, all while touching the lives of students, their families, and his colleagues, Brand said. "We know how difficult this time is for everyone in our community. To help all through the grieving process, we have a team of grief counselors working with us. for the kids and the faculty.”

Page, of the hamlet of Wallkill, also coached the junior varsity football team, in addition to coaching the girls’ junior varsity basketball team and assisted with the boys lacrosse team.

To help students and faculty struggling with the news, the school canceled all after-school practices and games Tuesday and held an expanded day so students could speak with teachers, coaches, advisors, and counselors, Brand said.

Police said the accident is still under investigation. Services have not been announced.
