James Fortugno, 88, Former Yorktown Resident

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – James Fortugno formerly of Yorktown Heights died June 17 at Nyack Hospital. He was 88.

Born April 20, 1924, in the Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of Alfonso and Conchetina Fava Fortugno. A former 20-year resident of Yorktown Heights, Fortugno worked as a detective for the New York City Housing Police Department for 25 years before retiring in 1982. Fortugno served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the European Theater.

He is survived by a daughter, Tina Fortugno, of Nanuet; a son, James (Elizabeth) Fortugno, of New City; and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Claudia, in January 2012; and a brother, Joseph.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Higgins Funeral Home in New City. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine's Church. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Putnam Valley.
