McElroy was born in Ossining on Nov. 16, 1928, to John J. McElroy, Sr. and Julia (Tobin) McElroy. He attended St. Theresa's School in Sleepy Hollow (then called North Tarrytown) and Washington Irving High School. While at WIHS, he played on the undefeated, untied football team in the 1944 regular season.
After his graduation from high school, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division in 1946 and trained as a paratrooper. He was honorably discharged in August 1948 and remained forever proud of his service to his country. Following his discharge, McElroy worked briefly for General Motors before using the GI Bill provisions to attend and graduate from St. Lawrence University in 1953.
While at St. Lawrence University, Jack met his wife, Patricia Jane Flowers. They were married on June, 26, 1954, and celebrated 60 years of marriage last year.
McElry worked for AT&T and the New York Telephone Co. He was responsible for the publishing and distribution of the Yellow Pages directory. After his retirement from NY Telephone, McElroy worked for the Federal Distributing Co. He finished his professional working career as a bank teller for Chemical Bank.
He was a member of the Old Guard in White Plains, enjoying the many activities shared with fellow retired professionals. He was named the Old Guards' Man of the Year for 1997. He was also an usher for St. Columbanus parish and a frequent Boy Scouts parent chaperone. In the early 1970s, Jack served on the Lakeland school district's Board of Education. McElroy moved to Jefferson Village in 1995 and served several years as president of the Village IX Association for resident owners.
McElroy is survived by his wife, Pat; children, Kevin (Mary), Peter (Abby) and Carrie Eisenhandler (Roy). He is also survived by a sister, Mary Theresa Zakett, and sister-in-law Mildred (DeMichele) McElroy. He is also survived by his six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Harold and James.
Calling hours will be held Friday, Jan. 30, at Yorktown Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 10 a.m. at St. Columbanus Church. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a contribution be made in his name to either the Hudson Valley Health Center or the Alzheimer's Association.
