YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Norman Raver, 86, a longtime Yorktown resident and former IBM employee, died Saturday, Jan. 3, after a brief illness.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of Fanny and Louie Rubenfeld and later married Veronica Rocasky. Raver received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the City College of New York in 1948 and a master's degree from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1951. He served with the Air Force as an airman and later as a government contracting civilian for ITT, managing hardware and software development groups. In 1961, Raver joined IBM and worked on the development of information retrieval and library systems. Later he worked on text processing, voice recognition and was involved with the early development of file design generation. He was the originator of data base design aid, the author of several peer reviewed articles and free patented designs now available on the Internet for public use.
Survivors include three children, Liz, Dede and Matthew; one daughter-in-law Marie; two sisters-in-law, Juanita and Natalie; one brother-in-law Jimmy; one niece, Alice; one nephew, Peter; and two grandchildren.
Calling hours will be 12:30-2:30 p.m. Thursday, at Clark Funeral Home, 2104 Saw Mill River Road, Yorktown Heights.
